Shawna joined the Lowe lab in summer of 2020 as a postdoctoral fellow. She received her Ph.D. in Bioenergetics and Exercise Science from East Carolina University. Shawna's current project is examining how the loss of estradiol impacts muscle inflammation and regeneration.
brian s
Brian joined the lab in the summer of 2021 as a postdoctoral fellow. He received his MS and PhD in Exercise Physiology from Purdue University. Brian’s current projects examine the sex based differences of the effects of sex hormones on skeletal muscle and satellite cell function. Outside of the lab Brian enjoys playing and coaching lacrosse, cheering for the Philadelphia Eagles and spending time with his family, friends and three cats, Milk, Cookie and Peanut.
zach r
Zack is a PhD student studying super-relaxed myosin in skeletal muscle. His background is in exercise physiology and he is interested in understanding how muscle is affected by obesity and sedentary behavior. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees at Minnesota State University, Mankato. Outside of the lab Zack spends his time woodworking and hiking with his wife and 3 dogs.

kate f

Kate is a third-year MD-PhD student and a first-year graduate student in the Integrative Biology and Physiology (IBP) Program. She received her BS in Physiological Sciences from Marquette University. In the lab, Kate is studying eccentric contraction-induced force loss in a mouse model of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and the contribution of redox systems to muscle physiology in dystrophin-deficient muscle. She is co-advised by Jim Ervasti. Outside of the lab, Kate enjoys reading, traveling, trying new restaurants, and spending time with her friends and family.

elise t
Elise is a lab technician who provides assistance throughout the lab, especially with histology. She recently completed her Bachelors in Human Physiology and will be pursuing an MD and PhD. In her free time, Elise enjoys traveling, shopping, and volunteering with the Minneapolis Aquatennial Ambassador Organization.
luke w

Luke is a research scientist in the lab, helping out with experiments and writing projects as needed, maintaining mouse colonies, and assisting in lab management. His research interests include how exercise and disease affects skeletal muscle metabolism. In his free time, Luke enjoys time with family and friends, outdoor rec, exercise, and live music.

mara s
Mara is a research scientist in the lab, managing the lab, helping out with experiments and maintaining mouse colonies. Her research interests include how sex hormones influence satellite cell (resident muscle stem cell) function, proliferation and differentiation. Outside the lab Mara enjoys gardening, reading, doing craft projects and exploring the outdoors with her husband and dog.
